crazy part about it is that they mean no harm by it & don’t see anything wrong lol. it’s just their culture. Japan has a close knit society, so if they met someone new & asked that same question, it would be seen as normal behavior.
as Americans we’re naturally standoffish. we perceive everything as a threat until proven otherwise. it’s damn near instinctual to look at an interaction like that as racism, and in a way it is racialized, but not in a negative way.
